Does Free Mean Valueless?

What do you think when something is given away online?

I put up a free “Progressive Muscle Relaxation” audio here yesterday. Does this mean you will doubt their value?

Maybe you think there is a catch? Perhaps I am going to present you with a “Tell 6 Friends” form before you can download it? Been caught before on that one? I have and I would have no friends left if I took any notice of it!

But seriously what do you think when something is free?

Are you likely to distrust it?

So if I sold you the PMR audio might you buy it it it was $5 or would you think more of it for $10 or more?

I read an interesting article today on Seth Godin’s Blog in which a contributer writes about his experiment with free stuff. They decided to give all their stuff away, that is stuff that they were previously selling online. They though they would generate income from the adverts on their site. Guess what?

It didn’t work because no- one clicked on the ads but even more strangely fewer people downloaded their stuff.

So should I charge for my audio? I am giving it away so you can check the quality in the hope that that will encourage you to buy other audios we make.

But am I mistaken?
